The saltmarshes of the world are important carbon resting places. It is the waterlogged nature of these ecosystems that allows organic matter filled with carbon to become embedded into layers of anoxic (no oxygen) sediment.

This accumulation of carbon and other nutrients is both a long time accumulation site but can also support important salty habitats and nurseries for oceanic birdlife and aquatic life.
