A major carbon source in the soil is fungi. It is in the bodies of the hyphae as chitin and it is moved around as sugars by fungi. Half to a third of soil is filled with these ancient wondrous fungal life, thus enriching the soil with fast time carbons. This fungi, once it dies and withers becomes an important carbon source for slow time carbon.
